How biodegradable materials PLA and PBAT degration in soil

Because in natural soils, temperature, moisture, microorganisms and other conditions are not controllable, they are less so than in the case of composting. At present, from the application of biodegradable plastic film and the results of degradation experiments in laboratory and field, most biodegradable plastics can be biodegradable under field soil conditions. For example, PBAT, PHA, PCL, PBS, etc., can be completely degraded under 5 months of soil burying under normal climate conditions, without affecting plants. The degradation of PLA material is relatively slow and takes a long time, but it can be completely degraded in about half a year after being mixed with PBAT and other materials. The figure below shows the observation results of PBAT, PBAT/PLA and PLA thin film burial experiment in Mentougou by using natural soil. It can be seen from the photos that biodegradable plastics can be naturally degraded under the condition of sufficient soil moisture and under the condition of appropriate temperature in northern spring, summer and autumn.
